Dry Eye Explained

What's actually happening to your eyes.

Dry eye disease happens when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or produce tears of poor quality that evaporate too fast. Either way, your eyes lose the stable layer of moisture they need to feel comfortable and see clearly.

It’s one of the most common reasons people visit an eye doctor — and one of the most under-treated, because most people try to manage it themselves with drops from the pharmacy long before finding the real cause.

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction — the tiny glands in your eyelids that produce the oil layer of your tears become blocked or underperform.
  • Screen time — reduced blink rate during prolonged phone, computer, and tablet use.
  • Environment — dry, heated indoor air, wind, and seasonal allergens.
  • Contact lens wear — daily lens use can disrupt the natural tear film over time.
  • Age and hormonal changes — tear production naturally declines with age, more so after menopause.
  • Certain medications — antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants can reduce tear production.

Over-the-counter drops add moisture back to the eye, but they don’t address why your eyes stopped producing enough good-quality tears in the first place — so the relief is temporary, and symptoms come right back.

That’s why a proper dry eye evaluation starts with a workup: checking your tear film, oil gland function, and blink pattern, and identifying which of the several underlying causes is driving your symptoms. Only then can we build a treatment plan that actually resolves the problem, not just masks it for a few hours.
