The Fitting Process
Why a good fit takes more than a prescription.
Every fitting starts with precise measurements of your cornea’s shape and curvature, your tear film, and the size of your pupil — the same eye can need a completely different lens design depending on these numbers.
This is especially true for irregular corneas, high astigmatism, or presbyopia, where an off-the-shelf lens often won’t sit correctly or provide clear, stable vision.
Once we know your eye’s shape, we fit you with trial lenses in the office and check how they actually sit and move on your eye — not just how they look on paper.
For specialty lenses like scleral or RGP, this step is where fit is refined until the lens is comfortable and your vision is sharp, sometimes over a few visits.
We check back in after you’ve worn your lenses for a week or two, since comfort and vision can change once you’re wearing them through a full day, every day.
Adjustments to lens material, curvature, or wear schedule are common in this stage — it’s a normal part of getting a lens that fits your eye, not just your prescription.

Can I be fit for contacts if I have astigmatism?
Yes. Toric soft lenses and RGP lenses are both designed to correct astigmatism, and Dr. Miglani will recommend the option that gives you the most stable, comfortable vision.
What if my eyes are too dry for contacts?
Many patients with dry eyes can still wear contacts successfully with the right lens material and fit — scleral lenses in particular are often more comfortable for dry or sensitive eyes.
How many visits does a specialty lens fitting take?
A standard soft lens fitting is usually one or two visits. Scleral and other specialty fittings can take several visits as we fine-tune fit and comfort — all included in the fitting process.
Will insurance cover my contact lens exam?
Many vision plans cover a portion of contact lens exams and fittings. Our team will help verify your specific benefits before your visit.
